**** SPOILER ALERTS BELOW
Something that other reviews seem to miss is that this show has INCREDIBLE Black & Brown stories and actors. Is it tacky and campy a lot of the time? Yes. But this is one of very few shows that has a large Black & Brown presence and that is so refreshing in any media. And it’s actually those people telling their own stories instead of white writers and producers appropriating those stories and selling it as their own. Also a lot of the horror/thriller content of these stories is based on cultural specific folklore and/or fears towards white supremacy/whiteness. In one episode, a nanny (unknown what heritage but Spanish speaking) goes to an affluent neighborhood to watch some rich white peoples kid while they go out, and she has to deal with some crazy Strangers-style murderers. In the end, she saves herself and the kid, and despite being a hero, she was tipped off to ICE and they come to detain and deport her. In another episode, a Filipino man struggles with his identity and pleasing his white coworkers and bosses. During the episode he is haunted by literally himself, but a version of him that is more physically expressive of his Filipino identity (traditional clothing and speaking only Tagalog), in the end he kills this version of himself thinking it would help him, but it only made the situation worse. Most of these episodes are culturally specific and shouldn’t be thought of as just cheesy or bad because in reality they are so much more than that, and even just the visibility of seeing Black & Brown-made horror stories is huge in itself. Similarly to the movie Get Out. If you’re white, you wouldn’t relate to a lot of the horror and anxiety depicted in these episodes. And if that’s the case, keep your opinion to yourself because instead of writing it off as bad, maybe you just actually don’t relate to what is being portrayed. Also Black & Brown people are often the first to be killed or written off in a horror show or movie (to highlight the racist lack of importance of the character, etc). But these people are main characters or save the day in this. This show is finally something that represents so much more than just a horror show, it’s culturally competent. I could give a standing ovation to this.
