They had the vision but we just can’t see it. The first hitting happened so fast that we were all left wondering what happened. We were put into Lily’s shoes, did he really hit her or was it an accident? But the entire movie being subtle and romantic made it boring.
We don’t see how things got so bad between Ryle and Lily, but when she explains why she’s divorcing him we understand. Maybe this was the best perspective from a victim? She romanticises the relationship and second doubts all the abuse, but the evidence helps her make a decision. I feel as confused as the victim after this movie… was Ryle that terrible? ðŸ˜
However, Ryle had so many red flags 🚩 in the beginning, only a sick person would agree to date him. Maybe that’s why we don’t see Lily as a hero in the end, because why did she get herself into this in the first place? Also, that was a whack proposal, who would say yes to that ? ðŸ˜
We don’t get why Lily fell in love with Ryle in the first place, and their relationship continued with the red flags, so when she decided to end the toxic cycle we didn’t see it as a heroic act.
Maybe the movie wouldn’t be terrible if I wasn’t comparing it to the book. The movie feels rushed, it needed a little more work. They focused more on the subtle details and forgot about the rest of the movie. They had the vision, but it was blurred.
