I don’t think I’ve ever hated a film this much, not only are the characters contrived they are not even contrived consistently. The writers clearly realised that the Cameron Diaz character was totally unsympathetic so threw in a hurried back story about divorced parents, and Jude Law’s character who is supposed to be the romantic “good catch” widowed devoted father, deeply sensitive (weeps at movies ) also has the predatory sexual morals of your average lager lout. In fact his own self description aside he is just a well spoken lager lout. How a so-called romantic relationship is based around to drunken sexual encounters between two people who never seem to actually speak to each other is inconceivable Apparently there was a parallel story with Kate Winslet and Jack Black It was totally overshadowed by the utterly repugnant characters played by Law and Diaz
