You can skip all this and read the last sentence at the bottom if in a hurry.
STORY: It is okay and has what you expect from a pokemon game and does a couple neet things there and there. It is charming enough to not get bored, but it is not impactful or great overall. The progression of the story is actually quicker this time around due to the always on exp share and the shorter routes.
WORLD DESIGN: looks pretty but painfully simple and linear. Some town and locations are there for 1 or 2 things and that's that. Some only existing so that you can have a gym battle at times and some also progress the story at times. Theres not much to comeback to later on. The game does have moments when you can look out and enjoy the view but in terms of content, it's lacking and the way you get to some areas are way too easy and linear. Less exploring overall and more like a tour of the land.
FIGHTS: trainer fights are fine and get the job done as filler between towns. Rival battles and gym leader battles with have cutscenes put in the middle of the fight for some extra flare but sometimes repetitive or straight up a warning of what's to come. Dynamixing and Gigantimaxing are pretty but rather lackluster after a couple of times. There really isn't much depth to the new gimmick as in essence your pokemon look bigger and have more hp, all there moves become z moves, and some transform like mega evolution. The whole thing lasts for about 3 turns and it quickly loses its charm after a couple fights. It's pretty simple since your pokemon gets bigger and hits harder with a small side effect at the end like a speed boost or attack drop. It's a spectacle through and through.
NEW POKEMON: some are amazing and some are just okay. Coalossal, Corviknight, and Orbeetal are some of my favorites and look badass. Some others not so much. To all there own regarding the aesthetic and design of the pokemon. Some you will like and some you will be okay with.
FINAL THOUGHTS: the game gives you the pokemon experience in much more streamlined, easier, and shorter way. The game doesn't have bad graphics, but compared to what the switch has done before, it really does feel like there could've been more. If you are looking for a pokemon game, it's here. If you wanted more like sidequests, interesting or simply different ways to play the game, or simply something that tells you that this is THE console pokemon game, it's not here.
This game has more in common with the gamecube pokemon games than the handheld mainseries games.
