This movie provides a significant message for everyone and it’s a lot deeper than I believe it gets credited for. It manages to address long term systemic social issues that have plagued our society in a way that brings to light real events of the past and present. It covers actual historical events such as the burning of books, the censorship of art, sexual repression, misogyny and most importantly; the division of people based on their skin color and the existential crisis that follows in the little town of “Pleasantville”as “colored” people begin to threaten the “pleasant nature” of a town whose residents have been content with the status quo. It’s easy to just take this movie on its face value of a being a simple fictional movie and novel plot, but if you walk away from watching this movie realizing that change is inevitable, yet growth is optional, you’ve at least scratched the surface of this hidden gem of a movie.
