This movie has epic scenery and tremendous acting. The reason for the 3 rating is that I was waiting for 3+ hours to figure out what was happening. There were 4 or 5 different story lines taking place with different actors, locations and conflicts. Very difficult to put these together to understand what was going on. Hardly any of the characters had a name so it was difficult to follow any character development. I was in a constant state of confusion…waiting for a glimmer of connection or understanding. I almost walked out two hours into the movie but then thought, ‘No, this is Costner; it will come together soon’. But it never did.
After I got home, I looked at other reviews to see if I was just stupid. But many reviews expressed the same thing I felt. One review by Amanda K. is exactly how I would describe the movie.
If you go to see this movie, be sure to stay through sneak preview trailer of Chapter 2’s coming attractions. That will really mess you up!
I am thinking of going to see Chapter 1 again, maybe a few days before the premiere of Chapter 2. That might give me some better insight.
Too bad Costner left Yellowstone prematurely to direct Horizon.
