The pacing is inconsistent. It opened hastily and cut short many scenes in first act, but dragged on in second act. When it finally reached third act, I feel like it was a missed opportunity because the scale was not as big as in the first instalment. It was literally just a fight on a sinking boat.
The scale doesn’t look as big as the first instalment. The world building is not as elaborate. The awe and shock are weak. The whale interaction in the second act is sublime and done extremely well, but the land world is handled with less care or at least not as good as the water stuff.
The story is shallow and mediocre. They brought back Stephen Lang and he had achieved nothing. And he was rescued after the defeat too. So the entire movie’s struggle was exactly negated at the very last moment. All fights were in vain. This is a major plot hole. It’s hugely disappointing to see him slightly elaborated on and then got beaten so easily. And he didn’t even die. So what was that fight for? He’s going to come back a third time? Don’t we have enough of him? What’s he going to bring next time?
I like the visual but I would not want to watch it again. The first one is definitely a more complete and transformative cinematic experience. But this one has more modern visuals and the water graphics are superb. The effects are ten times better than the last one and also stand out among other blockbuster movies. It looks insanely good. It’s a masterful craftsmanship.
