Neither I'm a critic nor genius about this medium but it's a small effort to share my experience and opinion of a very important film not only for Marathi industry but for the country. #feelproud
Nude’s journey to theaters then mirrors the very societal double standards it explores. This is a lyrical film about human beings and the arts struggling to survive in a hypocritical world.
The title might suggest otherwise, but Nude has multiple layers. It is a story of a wife’s plight, a mother’s struggle and a woman’s courage to emerge through all the hardships she goes through.
On the face of it, Nude is about Yamuna’s struggles against poverty, patriarchy and conservatism. At a macro level though, it examines the failure of social and political fundamentalists to understand art, and their conscienceless denunciation of the very works they consume with a lustful gaze.
Ravi has handled a variety of subjects, from a period biopic to a young romance. With another eminent filmmaker, Sachin Kundalkar co-writing the screenplay, he has produced a work very relevant to this time and place.
With Nude, he has raised the bar for his own work as well as for Marathi cinema in general. The audience needs to support this film if we are to see more groundbreaking work in future.
With the subject being what it is, two of the most difficult tasks are allotted to Kalyani Mulay who plays the lead role of Yamuna, This is a difficult and demanding role, which is sure to win her many accolades. She channels the turmoil of the character through her expressions and body language and it’s a treat to watch her. Chhaya as the pillar of support in Yaumna’s life is brilliant too. The two ladies complement each other and establish a chemistry that helps the film. The film is visually stunning captured Amalendu Chaudhari’s camera.
Ravi has made a poignant piece of cinema that doesn’t pander. The very fact that the I&B Ministry had a problem with it proves its point: That, vulgarity is in the eyes of the viewer.
