Summary as an avid Zelda fan:
Dull and uninspired overall. I'm struggling to force myself to finish the last bit of the game. Feels like it was made by a random team that makes Mario games. Not memorable and all Zelda games are better than this one. Absolutely shouldn't be priced at the same price as other games from the series. Wouldn't buy this game had I known what it was like.
Pros
- Tri is cute af. Doesn't have any personality besides being nice and socially clueless, but it's an ideal version of how Fi could've been.
Cons
- The spawning item concept was neat to begin with, but after a bit it becomes so boring and a chore due to factors below.
- You end up with way too many items so fast and the one big scrolling list is awful. It can easily make you motion sick from scrolling through.
- Even the most basic things like platforming and killing enemies takes forever, because you have to spawn items and enemies hit like ramen noodles or have bad AI. The game is twice as long because the slowdown of basic tasks pads the game. Never wanted to just God damned swing a sword more in my life. The might bar isn't enough she should be able to use a sword all the time.
- Game restricts you using various items in various places when problem solving.
- Story is very basic and there isn't much character development.
- The decision to still make Zelda girly and dainty. Personally I'm indifferent to things that throw in girl empowerment/equality, but it seemed like this was a premise of the game and would naturally attract girls to the game. From a gameplay perspective however, she moves very slow, always daintily holding her staff with both hands. She can't run, she can't roll, she can't swing a sword. Some fights were frustrating and looked so silly when she can't move like a normal person would in battle. I begged at the screen more than once to please run, roll, anything during a Ganon fight. I know its probably a Japanese thing but please don't make your protagonist a girl for if you're gonna put stupid female expectations on them that handicaps them.
- Smoothies feel like a weird tack on. It's so random and the ingredients make no sense. I love quirky, but this just feels dumb and gross. Whip two lots of butter together and you get a "radiant smoothie" which I guess is just butter... Mmm suck that through a straw. You can also blend and drink seahorses, which felt physically gross doing.
- Unless I missed it, the mechanic where Tri can hold an item on the other side of another item by targeting it specifically and he will pass through other items isn't explained in the game, but is necessary for some puzzles. I had to Google it as I had no idea what to do.
- The difficulty in the game seems inconsistent and I'm not sure who the target audience is. It's very mundane and easy most of the time, but a fair few of the puzzles were quite hard to work out for me at least, plus a couple of the boss fights were quite tough. Had to Google a few of the puzzles and sometimes the issue was just there being too many items to recall. It doesn't feel like it'd suit children but seems too dull for adults, and I love a good braindead game.
- The repeating frame stutter every few seconds. Might be better undocked but should work well both ways. It deserves to affect the rating as SO many switch games have performance issues and they arent doing anything about it.
