This new live action lacks the charm of the original.
The beginning of the iconic Avatar intro "earth, fire, water, air" sounded like it was actually paraphrased using Quillbot. Then Korra's grandma just repeated the original verbatim a few scenes later, why? The casting is mid. Only Sokka was the only good cast. Korra is supposed to have a strong personality, the new one is so meek and quiet. The relationships and characters personalities were just really hard to buy. The casting of Gyatso, Zuko, and Iroh were extremely disappointing. The wisdom and good nature of the Gyatso and Iroh were completely lost through the casting. Zuko's casting just seemed like your normal teen, not the angry one with a complex history and thirst for honor.
Also, airbenders can't just straight up fly, they are supposed to use their gliders to control the currents around it but Aang can just fly using just air? And then he suddenly switches to his glider midway? The bending was not fluid and hard to watch. Also, they're benders, they fight with bending 95% of the time, the amount of close range physical combat made absolutely no sense. The intro too, the random messenger running was an earthbender against a firebenders and you're telling me that for most of the scene they just ran and threw punches using no bending until the last moment?
It's hard to tell what this live action wanted to be, it's like it tried to be everything at once that made it fail at being good at one thing.
Disappointing, expensive, bland, but "prettier" remake that lacks the soul of the original.
I blame this on the bad writing and bad casting. Having either one could've saved it, but no. Poor quality all around except in CGI.
The casting should've focused on preserving the essence of the characters, honestly it might as well be a completely different show with brand new characters. Except Sokka.
The writing is trying to copy the original one to one while also deviating? Rushed at important moments and drawn out "new" scenes that weren't relevant to the plot. 2.5/5
