I am a survivor of abuse and a mother with bipolar disorder, and this felt like watching my own story. The instability in housing and jobs. The inability to ask for help or to want to burden others. A lack of a reliable support system. The feeling that no one can be trusted. The experienced reality that nothing is working out over, and over, and over again. It breaks my heart to read reviews on Maid that state emotional abuse is not equal to physical abuse, or that the main characters actions were not believable. My own wounds are very real, and I have lived through the consequences of my mother making these exact same choices. Maid is not a story about what should be done; it’s a story about what can happen as a result of abuse and mental health. I am so thankful for this story, actors, and Netflix for making this film.
