I'm very confused by the positive reception of this series. Disclaimer, I have not read the books. I didn't even know there were books prior to starting the show. To me, the story line of the show was a bit nonsensical and all over the place. It came across as pretty shallow. There did seem to be larger themes at play in the show, but they didn't explore them in a meaningful way. Impending doom, the fragility of humanity, earning survival (in a fight for limited resources between sentient, intelligent life, who deserves to survive?), autonomy vs manipulation, grappling with your creations used for destruction - the list goes on and on. The show just did not spend much time on any of this, and when it did, it had shallow takes on it. I did not find myself with an emotional connection to any of the characters. When they made an irrational or emotionally driven decision, I just did not care. I wasn't attached to any of them.
This all made me even further confused, as I could not tell if the show was trying to focus on the sci-fi first, or the characters/themes first. The science was not explained in a way that made it seem believable. The characters and themes were not developed well enough for me to care about either one. This show tries to do a LOT and ends up doing it all poorly in my opinion.
And, I know this has probably been mentioned plenty of times, but the casting was off-putting. Eiza Gonzalez is a great actress and did really well, but she looks like an IG model. It's really hard to believe her in her role as a world renowned scientist in this show.
The show is entertaining, but overall quite vapid. I think if you're a big fan of sci-fi, good character development, or the books, you won't love this show.
