I have no issues with a series deviating somewhat from the original book, but I saw no need to change the character of Harriet in order to delve into the civil rights issue. Was that a powerfully important issue of the times? Of course!! However, this was a book centered around a woman facing mind-boggling discrimination simply because she was a woman. Her neighbor was ‘that woman’ whom society told to grin and bear a bad marriage. Even if she wanted to escape it, the laws at the time made it close to impossible to succeed in a professional capacity or to even secure funding to support that goal or buy a house or a car or on and on. This was the crux of the story. Oh and why didn’t the screen writers address why the boys home declared Calvin dead? And why wouldn’t his mother, the attorney and Elizabeth go after them with guns blazing to discover that truth? There was plenty of rich material to display on the screen from the original story. Good job casting though…
