It gave me the feeling you get when you watch someone redraw a cartoon or parody a popular video. It felt like a fake copy of frozen that was trying too hard to be like the original. Olaf’s humour, though present, wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as in the original. The music was good, but wasn’t very memorable, and I feel like it could’ve been better placed and added more to the story/what the characters were feeling. The characters were all over the place, as well as the plot. The animation, though, was nothing short of incredible. But other than that, I wasn’t very impressed.
The story was hard to follow because the characters thoughts, feelings and intentions weren’t made clear enough. I was guessing a lot of the time and felt detached from their world. Things were happening for no reason or with no explanation, and I couldn’t tell why some elements needed to be included. The characters didn’t develop very much from the beginning and a lot of the things happening didn’t have anything to do with the other things happening.
*SPOILERS FROM HERE ON*
Much of the plot was predictable. Christoph’s proposal at the end, the grandfather starting the fight, the dam actually being a bad thing (we all know dams destroy habitats) and Elsa eventually “diving too deep and drowning” but we know she won’t actually die.
When they enter the mist, someone (I forget who) mentions that the Forest was supposed to transform them in some meaningful way. At the end, Olaf mentions that he feels like they all changed, and I honestly couldn’t agree less. Elsa and Anna’s quarrelling and tension during the film didn’t seem to have any clear resolution, and the trolls prophecy at the start didn’t seem to have any purpose or realization other than to start their journey. Some characters, like the boy and girl from the tribe who became friends with Christoph and Anna, just came and then left without doing very much. It was too confusing and hard to follow and so many things were unnecessary and unexplained. I still don’t understand how the river that knows everything functions and how Elsa made it work. Elsa asked the shipwreck to show her what happened and we still don’t know, all we got was a dramatic snow figure of her parents. I didn’t feel happy or sad when I should’ve and felt no connection with any of the characters. Honestly, I was expecting much better.
