I hated this film, and I loved the first one. I am so disappointed by this film and it just shows that it missed Del Toro's magic.
Firstly, Pentecost was NOT the hero of the first film. He sacrificed his life to save the mission, and so did Herc but no one remembers him apparently.
This brings me on to my next point of where the hell was Raleigh? Now apparently the actor was playing a different role for another project which is cool. However, the film entirely ignores his presence and what he achieved. Plus it then has the guts to kill Mako and have him not turn up at her funeral without any explanation.
My next point is there was some odd points of excitement I got from the fight scenes, it lacked so much and was done so poorly. Guillermo chose to shoot the fight scenes at night for a good reason, it looked better. And for God sake of your final fight is going to take place in the city of neon shoot it at night! The Jaeger's had no mass or force to them, they were thrown around like paper dolls. Guillermo often used little environmental details to create a sense of scale in the first film and it was done so well. This film does it about twice both are poor attempts, the rest of the time it's just people running and screaming for there life.
There are so many plot holes in this film, too many characters and not enough time develop a story anywhere near as strong as the first one. Overall the first film was an ode to the kaiju and gundam genres, the second film is a poorly written parody.
