The movie was WAY better than I had expected. Marvel has been progressively upping their game, and this movie continues that trend. It was emotionally resonant, it was more about story than effects, with the result being that the effects consequently had more impact. As it was making a nod to many wuxia films, the martial arts scenes were excellent, and the choreography was not stale, which had been a worry. HOWEVER, this would have been better if they had NOT tried to insert comedic moments. They need to stop characterizing audiences as being so shallow that each movie "must have comedy". It's insulting to the intelligence of moviegoers. Marvel needs to simply dive into the dramatic end of the pool, and give us a story that is not watered down by "comic relief valve moments". ESPECIALLY as this was a nod to Asian cinema Hong Kong Triad movies and wuxia movies, the comedy is a distraction from the story and interruption of the rhythm. Nonetheless, it benefits from the presence of Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh, whose screen presence and gravitas are actually the real anchors of the movie. Get rid of the "light-hearted" content, I say. Awkwafina, whom I admire and respect, seemed out-of-place due to her role as snark-provider. And thankfully, it isn't the same old story just about stopping "the bad guy that wants to end the world", "the bad guy that wants to take over the world," "the bad guy wants to bla bla bla". That element is present, but that isn't what the movie concentrates on ; it is centered on family dynamics, and gets more mileage because of it.
