I have now watched this film twice, once in February 2020 when it came out, and I knew nothing of Anya Taylor-Joy, and again in November 2020 after watching her in Queen's Gambit. She is excellent, along with the rest of the cast. The costumes, the colors, the cinematography, the music, oh my (remember Amelie, where color played a part; this production has that same feel) The director gets two things about Austen: Austen sprinkles humor throughout and Austen always moves the action forward, no dawdling. This is as good as, or better than, the 1996 TV version, and the 2009 Emma, both of which deserve watching. This version is so much better than the Gwyneth Paltrow version that if I were she, I would try to destroy all copies of it. I also saw some interesting similarities in this Emma with the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice, (for one, certainly the awakening effect of the dance at ball), a version which also is true to the Austen pace. I cannot recommend this production highly enough, and can attest that it is worth re-watching.
