The strength of the book is the reputation, abilities, and sheer determination of this one man. Cortland should have been more methodical, deadly, and shown to always be fighting for what he believes is right. His gunfights and hand-to-hand fights were fun to watch but it wasn’t indicative of a highly trained rogue agent.
It’s a shame this movie was given to the Russo brothers to direct. It played out like an action movie with cool effects, engaging action/fight scenes, and cheesy one-liners but in the end not memorable. The difference with the Marvel series is that if one flops, they have another already in the works. There is nothing spectacular about this film other than being the most Netflix has spent on one and having three high profile actors (and actress).
In contrast, a recent production of a book in a similar style is “The Old Man” and it is phenomenal what they accomplished with a much smaller budget. This could have been done better for Greaney’s sake but if he just wanted a Hollywood action film where viewers excuse the simple plot for the great action scenes, it’s what he got.
