The brilliance of Battlestar Galactica is that it is an intense lens on our American culture. Trek alum Ronald D. Moore's BSG came out in 2004 while we were in full-pitched pursuit after Al Qaeda terrorists. Everyone was afraid of sleeper cells (agents/models). With new laws passed and agencies created to give broader surveillance powers, some began to question if there was government overreach, trampling on civil liberties in the name of security. This same episode, "Pegasus" in 2022 addresses the threat of the rise of authoritarianism in the United States, in the name of security (mainly the narrative of White Nationalists). BSG is a timeless, hard look at ourselves. As Sharon answers Commander Adama's question on why the Cylons hate us and if we deserved to live, "Maybe you don't." Franklin Roosevelt answered the question about who we are, "a democracy...if we can keep it."
