Two stars for the sets and costuming and a few of the actors. However it is completely lacking in the charm, charisma and humor of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton. 2 of the 3 main characters are entirely off-putting. Mrs. Russell is a cold, one dimensional b!tch with not an ounce of redeeming character - even villians need to have some humanity or depth to keep us interested. The "romantic lead" speaks in a flat, disaffected monotone and has the spark and sex appeal of watching white paint dry. (Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon and Tessa Farmiga as supporting cast are always money). Like all of these Regency era period pieces, the "soap opera plot" is only made interesting by the likability, relatabilty and charm of the characters. These characters are not likable, and not even memorable - due in part to the terrible casting and poor acting. Finally, there is none of the sharp wit of Downton Abbey, or "inside jokes" of Bridgerton. I did not laugh or even smile once during the interminable first episode. I had high hopes but they were completely dashed by this beautifully costumed but terribly cast and poorly acted stinker.
