[SPOILERS AHEAD]
A movie with a lot of potential, but disappoints instead with the utter lack of direction. Lots of great ideas, but none come to fruition.
1. Patriarchy... they haven't shown it correctly at all. They could have done so much, but the ideas were half-baked with no depth. All it showed was ken being obsessed with horses.
2. Barbie's purpose: spoiler alert? She had none.
She went to real world to solve her human's problems. But turns out the human just had a teenager daughter who was simply being a teenager. The human herself? A perfectly normal and sunny person.
Now, Ken discovers patriarchy (and horses?) in the real world.
So the barbie world becomes a ken world due to patriarchy, or because ken likes horses now?
And now it's the barbie who needs saving.
In the end, turns out what barbie wanted was to be a real human. And she becomes one. Which is actually a decent ending, if the whole movie had been about it. We don't get to see any motivations fuelling the desire to be human, and there is no rhyme or reason to the random wish at the end.
The whole movie could have been about barbie wanting to be human. Instead, at first they say she has to go to real world because she is malfunctioning. Thoughts of death in a perfect world? It's because the human playing with her had dark thoughts apparently. Like I said before, the poor human turned out to be a normal mom to a normal teenage daughter with whom she wanted to bond more. And who turns out to do the saving of the barbie land.
The patriarchy shown in ken world was so one dimensional... as if it was written by a wannabe feminist who has no idea what feminism actually is.
Retarded, juvenile, directionless and disappointing.
