You know, we normally feel good after watching post-apocalyptic movies. We leave the theatre with a feeling of hope. This is because post-apocalyptic movies in general aren't about death and decay. Rather, they're about rebirth. It's this sense of rebirth that gives us hope; the knowledge that those survivors are going to continue to survive and that they'll thrive and rebuild a newer, better society. And that gives us hope.
The Road isn't like that. The Road isn't about ribirth and renewal. No, The Road is about death and decay. If you love post-apocalyptic movies because of the feeling of hope that they leave you with, then DO NOT look for that in The Road. Instead, expect to feel robbed, to feel assaulted. Expect to feel hopeless. Instead of building a better future, The Road feels more about finding the least horrible way to die. This isn't a post-apocalyptic movie as much as it's an extinction movie. It's characters aren't trying to make a lie for themselves as much as they're trying to find a nice quiet corner where they can curl up and die.
If you find that description appealing, then you will enjoy this movie. You'll be able to draw bliss from the bleak and hopeless pain that grows in abundance through this film. You'll be able to taste their mortality in their tears. You will share in a helping of ectasy as you watch the life drain out of their eyes... You're also probably a sociopath, in which case you know that there's nothing wrong with that at all. If you ARE a sociopath, however, you probably also find it very hard to find a film that you can really enjoy. Well, look no further. This film was apparently made for the 'sociopath community.' If you can watch it through to the end, I guarantee you'll enjoy it. If you're a normal person, on the other hand, your experience might differ.
