A brilliant depiction of a man's descent into madness. The movie is particularly good at illustrating just how little a speck of dust Arthur is on the butt of society. He is nothing to the world around him and yet he can't seem to live a life in peace. Arthur is treated incredibly poorly despite his good heart that is evident throughout the film. He tried so hard and it was all spit back in his face. I think the moral message is that you never know what someone is going through. You never know the world of pain someone lives in and you should act with more love to all people. Murray Graham mocking him on television was wrong, but in itself it wasn't enough to make someone snap. However, it was one of the last threads of Arthur's sanity that was severed, unbeknownst to Graham.
What else can I say? The movie was brilliant. The pacing was captivating, the soundtrack was atmospheric, the plot was heart wrenching, and Joaquin Phoenix knocked it out of the park. If you enjoy quality film, this is for you.
