Definitely not 13+. Probably 17-18+, definitely not for 16 year olds either. Teenagers should not read this without their parents consent. Was assigned to read, other assigned books were alright, but this was just off the scale. Was very disturbed.
- Too many perverse themes: Unnecessary sexual details in virtually every chapter. Incest-filled, pedophilia, sexualizing of female characters. The author seems like a nice person. I don’t understand how she couldn’t make it less Rated R. Why couldn’t she avoid pointing out and describing breasts throughout the whole book? The incest descriptions were also not needed… and the descriptive sexual assault scene of Estha was too much. I’m sorry but I quite literally could not read it without feeling disgusted.
- Focuses more on metaphors and imagery than plot: I think if she took the chance to clearly describe the story, it would be a little better, especially with how it jumps (?) back and forth between times. It’s a little hard for many people to understand what’s going on. The description was okay at first, but the more I read, the more annoying and frivolous it became. Too wordy and takes many paragraphs to describe one feature of a character.
-Extremely slow paced, tedious.
-Lacks character and captivating charm. There are many other books about India that are so well written, making the reader want to know more. This, unfortunately, is not it.
