An exquisitely animated story, though not really Pinocchio. I was given the translated novel as one of my first to read as a child, and I found the truly dark themes of childhood amorality disturbing then, as I would now. This, on the other hand, this is a relatively lighted tale that turns the themes upside down, and recreates Pinocchio as we would have all preferred him. While that makes it an enjoyable film -- with joyfully expressive, detailed animation, it sidesteps the original themes. I had hoped a modern adaptation might go there -- this did not.
