I read this book in 1943 and cried. I was 11 years old and was an avid reader but "Lad a Dog" made me cry. My mom was very understanding and shared that she cried over books sometimes. Although I'm still an avid reader, I recall being brought to tears a few times and each time I thought of "Lad a Dog." Surprisingly I don't have a copy of "Lad" but I'll try and rectify that via the internet.
One other book-"Marta Finds the Golden Door" (now entitled "Marta and the Nazis") I read later in '43. I did obtain two paperback copies of that book - It's cover picture is quite scary-but then the story itself is scary.
I'm curious as to whether anyone reading this has read either or both of these books.
