The book serves as an introduction to American literature; the language of the book is extremely accessible, yet interesting while providing valid information about the formation of American literature. The book is not meant to be viewed as a comprehensive dive into political or historical events of the time -- though some of the important events that affected the literature and culture of America is indeed included so that the reader can have a bit of context as well, which I think is a nice touch, for it increases the comprehension of the reader. Definitely a good read if you desire an entry into American literature.
