Damn Daniels, you done it again.
Where do I even begin with this movie? Let's start with this was one of the most profound movies I have watched in recent memory. It is hilarious, sincere, endearing, and genuinely whacky. There was no moment where I was not on the edge of my seat with bated breath, curious to see what comes next.
The movie, at a cool 2 1/2 hour screen time, paces itself very well, giving you ample time to understand the plot and progression of the story. Everything from the lighting, the soundtrack, the camera angle and shots, creates this very real sense of chaos which mirrors the protagonist current state of mind and her life. It is, without a doubt, one of the most visually compelling movies I have ever seen. All of these elements culminate in probably one of the most prolific, hilarious, and deeply profound experiences you could have.
It is very hard to convey how powerful this movie is. I have not laughed at a movie like that in years, with strange cutaways to some of the most clever writing I have seen. Nor has a movie ever given me full license to ugly cry in a theatre. I tried to hold back but at a certain point, I just started sobbing and stopped caring what others thought of me; A true rollercoaster of experiences.
This movie may not be for everyone, and that's okay. It covers really extremely topics such as Existential and Cosmic Nihilism, what it means to be a good mother and a good wife, conflicting heritage traditions with environment, and many more. All my friends left that theatre, stunned in silence, crying and consoling each other, and feeling deeply profound. The movie may be a bit jarring for those who prefer a bit more streamline approach to movies, as this does well not to force feed you a concept. You won't be consuming a Marvel Product - it's very nuanced.
If you feel like going on a cosmic and spiritual journey that transcends what media has previously presented, I urge you to look into this film.
