Worst play I've ever seen
I am an ex-dramatist and theatre student - for many years, I have played in and thoroughly enjoyed watching a plethora of beautiful and mesmerising productions, and I can assure you that this was not one of them. If anything, one might refer to it as the 'anti-play' of all plays, provided that it accomplishes none of the goals a good production attempts to achieve.
All of the characters speak only of themselves and others in the third person - the result of this is that the audience must endure over three hours of pure narration. In addition, this makes it impossible to form any type of emotional connection to any of the characters because they speak as though they are not speaking of themselves!
So called playwright Stefano Massini expects you to 'imagine' everything described by the Lehman brothers and I ask, what sort of daft idea is that? Do we not come to the theatre to be entertained? Do we not come to be captivated by another world as it is created before our very eyes? Surely, this is the first time a playwright expects you to do their job for them, as well as pay a small fortune.
The set is an utter joke - a colourless, grey rotating cube with some empty cardboard boxes, a desk and some office chairs. I could throw together a better set with my eyes closed and my hands tied behind my back, the Lehman brothers would be turning in their graves.
Only come to this production if you thoroughly enjoy flushing money down the toilet, have sadomasochistic tendencies or need to catch up on some sleep.
