There’s a fun game somewhere here but I’m not sure it will ever present itself.
There’s challenge to this game, but not in a rewarding way like I’m used to, more of a tedious boring way.
The good:
Graphics
Art style
Creature design
The bad:
Imprecise controls - repeated environmental deaths due to weightless character with jerky movements.
Performance issues - stuttering
Enemy placement - enemies are placed in locations where camera struggles to create viable viewing angles for combat, the respawning umbral enemies constantly whips your camera away leading to a missed combo.
Abilities - inclusion of umbral parasites in combat is more of a nuisance than a challenge.
Boss battles - some bosses can feel tediously excessive with long attack patterns and small attack windows leading to a drawn out repetitious fight.
Limited enemy variety- enemy variety is notably lacking for a game of this type.
Environmental design - much more corridor oriented with not as much open space and scale we saw in elden ring which exaggerates the camera angle annoyances and likelihood of hitting the environment and stun locking yourself at a vulnerable point to take damage. You end up nervous to attack for fear the attack would simply throw you off the map or hit the narrow environment instead of the enemy in front of you
Disclosures:
I’m by no means an expert and average skill at best but I have played dark souls 3, bloodborne, demon souls and sekiro so I have a fair idea of how this sub-genre feels and this one just feels more tedious than fun.
