Blake Lively can’t act.
I found most of the character interactions to be completely unbelievable. and the side characters were just flat…. more emphasis was placed on jenny slates dresses than her actual character development, she’s supposed to be the main characters best friend, all i took away from her was she’s rich and wears outlandish earrings.
and omg all the horrible fake laughter from Blake….. not only could you tell it was forced, but also those reactions felt wildly inappropriate due to the circumstances of the dialogue. like instead of acting, or trying to go through a dramatic scene let’s just laugh weirdly, bite my lip, cover my mouth with ring covered hands…. no actual emotion or depth- just fake laughter.
for example, the rooftop scene, you know someone for 5 minutes after you’ve just seen them have an adult temper tantrum and you’re like let’s tell « naked truths » and randomly go « i slept with a homeless kid when i was a teenager » that’s so out of pocket to say to a literal stranger. like yeah you’re grieving but…. that’s just a weird thing to say to someone you don’t know. i just found the whole first meeting of Ryle and their flirting to be so cringe and unbelievable.
and again, jenny slate’s ridiculous character, because yeah every rich person decides to randomly walk into a store remodel and go « oh i want to work here even though i have no clue what your business is » and then continue working in Lily’s flower shop after she had a her baby? dude as if. so unrealistic. first of all, that’s not rich people behavior- work for fun? they don’t do that, they maybe volunteer at the DAR or something but ok sure jenny slate take on an hourly wage job as a flower cashier? sure.
i guess every character in this movie, besides Atlas, is apparently rich and comes from money, like does anyone know the average rent price in Boston, because it’s not cheap. yet all the apartments featured would have been like $8,000 a month at least. lily’s childhood home on coastal maine? yeah that wasn’t a cottage, or some middle class home, that was a rich people house. yes rich people also deal with issues like domestic violence, but the pervasive display of extravagant wealth was distracting from the plot, which is hilarious in and of itself because what was the plot again?
also the wardrobe for the cast was bad? isn’t that all Blake wanted to talk about during the promotion of the movie? the clothes weren’t even good, those rhinestone sock boot things she wore to jenny slates birthday party? i’m sorry but i thought they were very ugly.
not only did the plot suck, the script wasn’t well written, there was barely any character development let alone decent characters to begin with, but most importantly and detrimentally- Blake Lively cannot act. Justin Baldoni was great though, it was cool to see Hasan in a movie. the actor who played Atlas seemed cool and did a good job with his role. but i found the women in this movie insipid, honestly this movie was a waste of time.
