I will admit this book started off very interesting to the point where I didnt want to put it down. I had hopes that this book might expand my knowledge of topics im not well versed in or fill some fissures in things that I thought I understood. My excitement quickly disappeared as this book turned into an opinionated piece laced with highschool student level sarcasm instead of one based on historical evidence (which is why I think most people are going to be reading this).
The book starts off great which many other reviewers have also mentioned however it quickly turns into a bit of a rant comprising of what is clearly the authors opinion. He raises a few thought provoking ideas seeing as he's a philosopher, postulations if you will, but nothing that me and a couple of my buddies haven't brought up after a couple beers on a friday night either.
As someone with a pretty good background on some topics covered throughout the chapters, the authors stance on some of them range from laughable to me questioning why he would write about something he clearly knows so little about. Theres very clear bias in some of his "accounts" of historical events/constructs which I would almost call negligent that this book was published and pushed as something fact based.
I hate to sound like one of those people who seem to think they're right and everyone else is wrong. I'll add that I love to learn things that challenge what I believe to be true even if it requires me to change my position on a topic but ANYONE with moderate understanding of history, especially middle east and south asian history let alone a bit of biological knowledge or a mild to moderate interest in psychology or human evolution can see that Harari has stepped far outside of his area of expertise. All this doesn't even cover that fact that he seems to be recounting some version of woke history that I never recall studying. Im obviously paraphrasing this but I lost it when we get to the part where he tries to convince us that there's no difference between men and women especially psychologically... Again forgive the paraphrasing but yeah, this is where I deleted the book off my kindle about a year ago.
He should ease off on his sarcasm and cynicism if he wants to entertain anyone with more than a couple hundred brain cells (sorry to those of you who somehow liked this book), I got about 40% of the way through this according to my kindle and decided to stop wasting time and do something useful like watching some paint dry.
This book felt like such a betrayal to the promise by which it was promoted that im leaving a review...for a book. For the first time in my life
