I was SUPER excited to see Willow was coming back, but the problem is that 9 times out of 10, the way films are created these days, the directors take that nostalgic feeling out, which was found in the original.
They spotlight 3 rules, which seem extremely forced: there must be 1 gay person, at least 1 POC and 1 interracial couple. They make these rules center focus, to let the audience know that there's some type of inclusion and it's not fitting for the purpose of the story. There is a way to finesse all of that without spotlighting it for the sake of politics.
They didn't stick to their original rules of magic. Yes, there were brownies, fairies and a sorcerer in the original, but they used the magic sparingly and when it made sense with the story. The original story wasn't about magic, but rather about an uncommon hero. The audience felt warm-hearted because we were watching the making of a hero, who just so happened to want to learn magic. The excitement wasn't in the magic, but rather in the fact that he didn't want to be a hero, he just wanted to do what was right. So, forcing him into heroic scenarios, with the macho lady's man, made for a great magical movie.
This new series just seems forced. The teens use phrases from today and I was never a fan of clothing from that era looking like it came fresh out the box when we're dealing with travelers or farmers.
