Have read all but four of Modern Library's Top 100 novels and switched to Time's 100 (45 of which are not on former list).
Yes I understand Lessing was prolific, won the Nobel Prize for literature, etc. But THE GOLDEN NOTEBOOK was the most tedious, monotonous, etc., of all. Clearly a self-portriat of Doris, she blatantly reminds us a hundred times how intelligent she is, so I can add "obnoxious" to my review. Being Catholic, I cannot help but be put off by the fact she abandoned two young sons in her twenties. So I was inflamed by her character Anna's constant preaching of how important it is to nurture the young. Further, TGN does not hold up as a novel. Read all 635 densely packed pages carefully. Someone tell me what I missed.
