The sole reason we are getting a live action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender was because it was so great. The fan base is vast and has always wanted more but sometimes things are better left alone.
The story line of ATLA and the questions it asks us as viewers, to the character personalities and their development from beginning to end and the emotion behind the voices in every scene are some reasons why it was so great.
This live action is a complete remodel, retwisting or remake and should be titled as such. The more I watch the more I rewrite this review and the worse this show becomes along with me not wanting to watch the rest.
A lot of small details in the story line that help form not only the good overall narrative but was connected to character development as well are not present in this remake. The story is rushed leaving out all of those details which create a lack of character depth, emotion and direction.
I’m 6/8 episodes in, Aang has been told about an invasion at the North Pole and hasn’t even been told about his responsibility of ending the war by summers end because of sozins comet. This tells me that this season is going to solely be about “The siege on the North” rather than the narrative in which Aang needs to save the world by summers end which created the pressure in which he needed to master all the elements and the journey he has ahead of him. Aang hasn’t even touched any other element other than air, yet Kataras journey as a water bender has been fulfilling so far.
Early in the original book 1 we as viewers had answers to simple questions like who, what, where, when and how. I’m 6 episodes into this live action with only 2 left and have no idea what’s going on. It is very messy and confusing as to where this story is going as Aang has no clue that he even needs to master all of the elements as he hasn’t even touched any of them or tried to learn any.
