I understand what the author's purpose was with this book, but ultimately think it was a bad read. The continuous emotional struggles these characters face, almost without a break, makes the novel almost trite because of how expected and unsurprising the book becomes. This book didn't change me, and wasn't even difficult to read after a certain point, since I almost lost empathy with the characters as it was just like obvious what would happen next. I see nothing enriching in reading a book that tragic and graphic when it's not about real people.
