As one who enjoys quality film, this one is great! Brendan Fraser pulls out his best performance after a long hiatus as the main character, Charlie, which he won an academy award for best performance by an actor. Sadie Sink continues to impress with her strong dramatic performance as the daughter. And Hong Chau really deserved her Oscar nomination for her performance as Charlie's friend and house nurse. The entire cast had great chemistry throughout the film.
Additionally, the plot was very emotional and relatable in so many ways. The writing was fantastic, especially on how it weaves so much drama and scenery in one solitary place, Charlie's flat, throughout the film. Overall, this film really seems to be a passion project for the cast and crew, due to the quality of the production even though it is a low budget film.
As for the well written script of the film, there were some surprising bits of dialogue that could strongly spark conversation, after a viewing. If you are familiar with Darren Aronofsky, you will be familiar with a theme common to most of his movies: religion, especially Christianity. It also seems that he has chosen to criticize the religion quite often; i.e. Mother!, Noah ( a spoof to the real story), & etc. I mention this because I am a Christian, but I still appreciated this film. I appreciated its honesty, which, I feel, is the theme of this story.
Lastly, the film depicts the so called 'Christians' in the film as dishonest, hypocrites, and even hateful to those they are trying to help or need sympathy. Again, as a Christian myself, I can agree with these depictions. They are very much an issue today, especially when they voice their opinions and judgements toward others without understanding and love. I thank the writers and director of this film for pointing this out and sharing something honest. End of review.
I speak more on the use of Christians in the film below. So, if interested, read on.
In defense to my belief in Christianity, according to the Bible, I will share my thoughts on how the film criticizes Christianity according to the people who practice it.
In my opinion, I think these examples, in this film, are shedding light on a common problem with many who call themselves Christians today. I definitely think that many who claim to be in the faith, are not, because of how they express very little understanding or knowledge to the morals and standards set forth by the Bible itself. So, my hope is that the film, with its honest depictions of Christians, will put the spotlight more on the people who falsely or incorrectly practice Christianity, and not the belief itself. Because even in the Bible, God/Jesus claim to be *truth and *love himself. So, if any Christian demonstrates an absence of these two major qualities, they are not Christians or have errored in their faith.
