As a long-time fan of FNAF, i was so excited to go and had an amazing time. I have done many studies in to the lore and grew up watching a lot of the theories on the lore. It's hard to not get excited over this franchise but I will do my best to keep my enjoyment as a fan separate from my enjoyment as a movie watcher.
disclaimers :)
I will say if you are not familiar with the basics of the lore then some of the references/ moments may not make sense to you. If you are going in looking for a horror movie, this is not for you. ALSO. some people talk about the movie like it is supposed to be just like the games and books but keep in mind they are not the same. FNAF as a whole reuses the same names a lot so don’t take it personally that Mike the security guard in the movie is not the same as mike Afton (William’s son) in the games and books. My personal headcanon is that it is some alternate timeline but that's just a theory ;)
complaints:
If I had to make a complaint about it I would say there weren't as many jump scares as I would have liked. The ending while satisfying, was kinda weird (but overall didn't ruin it for me). It didn’t come out of nowhere considering how absurd this franchise is but seeing it take a more serious turn would have been cool. There were a few consistency errors (again not enough to ruin it for me but just some things I noticed). When Mike comes in from his shifts it's 6 am but it's bright outside and the setting is not really told to us or implied very well which can make for a confusing viewing experience. And lastly for the set up of the movie there was a LOT of backstory told by Vanessa and I wish that she didn’t act like an exposition waterfall and that the movie did more showing than telling. I.e. Mike talking to someone about the job and them mentioning something about the spooky history there.
compliments:
This movie didn't take itself too seriously and didn't overcomplicate the lore which I was afraid of going into it. The lore is complicated enough as it is and I'm glad that they didn’t overcomplicate the movie to help solve the games, instead focusing on making a good movie. I also liked how the children were portrayed not as evil villains but as manipulated innocents. I found the fort scene to be a perfect demonstration of that. Some see it as cringy and childlike but here's the thing, THEY ARE CHILDREN. Why wouldn’t they act like children ESPECIALLY when they see a new kid to play with? That scene also helped keep the movie from becoming too serious and gave us all a good laugh. Also, the music was AWESOME. From the children's chorus to the living tombstone playing at the end, the song choices were perfect. The casting was also incredible!! The child actors were good and didn't bring the movie down at all. Golden Freddy’s actor slayed. The performances of the actors went beyond my expectations for sure.
This movie was obviously not a cash grab from what I have seen and lots of dedication and care went into every shot of the movie. From the beginning 8-bit intro to the puppet music teaser at the end, the attention to detail was insane. Watching it was so surreal and brought me back to when I was a kid trying to figure out who the purple guy was with my friends. Seeing all the other fans around me was so fun and rewarding. I never thought I would write a review for this movie but I’m so glad I can now. Thank you Scott and everyone who was a part of this movie.
