I’ve read all of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. I’ve come to know all the regular characters and come to love the idea of a village like three pines. So I guess I’m spoiled. The tv series is s tremendous disappointment. None of the charsctets are anything like the ones I’ve come to know. Inspector Gamache should be more French Canadian than American Midwestern. The villagers aren’t bunch of isolationists. And so on. And the dialog, so full of cliché that I wonder how the actors manage to say their lines. I visited Quebec and Montreal several years ago, just to see where these good stories might have taken place. Where is Canada in this series? What makes this show any different from Law & Order?? What has happened to Penny’s insight into human nature?(No, it’s not conveyed through the humble and sincere looks Molina manages to create in spite of the script.) I fear the work of a brilliant author has been reducef to the mindane. No. This just won’t do.
