Warning! Some spoilers ahead, incredibly in love with this film. Definitely a new favourite.
Amazing film. I know everyone's so worked up over Jim Parson's 'mean' character but as Ryan Murphy said, you need to look deeper into their roles. Michael is a character who just recently finds God, therefore he is internally homophobic. Larry is a polyamorous fashion photographer who has a messy relationship due to being with other men, in which he feels his partner does not understand him as his reasoning for polyamory is autonomy. Emory and Bernard are two gay men with a fear of opening up to [will not spoil.] I've explained enough of what some of the characters represent, of course there are others that you'd be surprised by,my point is that they explain many types of gay men / people with all sorts of feelings about their identity.
As an older teenager, larry's character, played by Andrew Rannells (an AMAZING Broadway actor) was played so amazingly well, it hit home an brought many tears. You can see his desperate need to be understood and to show that he does love his partner, even though he might be the jealous type when he is around others. It can be so hard to be understood when you don't realise that the person you love is actually trying to, that his partner is attempting to compromise to his way of wanting to love.
This movie was able to show just how racism and homophobia was back before they found their rights, there will be racist and homophobic terms, that's a caution warning as this is set in New York, 1968.
The characters, Bernard and Emory were played terrifically to show the treatment they got in school or at work, how they feel to those they have loved. It's such a tearful movie if you're an open minded individual.
Its a work of art, i love both the old movie and its remake.
