I am not sure if they could have butchered the book anymore when they made this movie. Its not even close to the same story. Funnily, I can enjoy is OUTSIDE of the book and that is the only reason it gets 2 stars and not 1. The cinematic value is pretty amazing. Great art and application of cgi well before its time. Movies are only recently able to consistently achieve this level of beauty in a film...so its gets credit for that. but damn if you want to know what really happens.. read the book. Or listen to it. It is a much more interesting story. For one thing, the kids are not dead in the book. I think the movie just wanted to make Ann's suicide hit worse. Or maybe have more reason for it happening. But your soulmate dying is reason enough for her I think. She didn't need the additional pain of them passing away too. Read the book. Seriously. Richard Matheson is a much better story teller of his story than this movie.

I didn't have any idea how they would manage to tell the wonderful story that was so long into just a mere few hours but MAN. They sure impressed me. They managed to touch down on every pivotal moment of Theo's life while still keeping the pace. Crowley changed up the delivery in the form of a circular time telling with very amazing flash backs to the bombing Theo survived. The flashbacks reveal more and more each time. We saw all of this in a linear fashion in the first approximately 80 pages in the book. But the way Crawley presents it make the viewer able to draw very crucial parallels that the movie could have never delivered in the few hours it had to tell the story. I am 100% unsure how the critics could score this movie so poorly. It was a masterpiece in my opinion. Main complaint they had was that it both dragged and yet rushed the ending. But really. That's exactly how it was in the book. The first 3/4 of it dragged yet still kept you turning those pages. So. It kept to fashion yet still kept the viewer engaged. Which I consider an impressive feat.
