It's funny to see that all the rave reviews are just a month or two old and how they're praising the fact that it foreshadowed the covid 19 pandemic. I wonder if those people even read the book.
Short answer, it didn't forsee the pandemic. By that logic Resident Evil would be a much more appropriate candidate. Just because the book mentions a virus which originated from China (not so in the original edition as I've heard) people are too eager to jump on the bandwagon.
I admit I read the book because I was curious. I was also terribly let down. The book starts off well enough and quickly slips into fast paced action. But if you want a 'medical thriller' this is not the book for you. And it becomes clear pretty soon. The 'thriller' element doesn't feel that intense either. There are challenges, yes, but they seem to overcome every one of them far too easily. As if by magic. (That's a spoiler right there.) The end was not as satisfying either.
Perhaps if you don't think of it as a medical thriller and think of it as complete fiction, you might enjoy it.
