There is a life lesson in this story. in the closing pages as you read when the main character, Elizabeth destroys the marigolds you realize she did that because she was unhappy and hurt herself. Her family, like many others, were hurting financially and emotionally She took her family's pain out on the marigolds. If she couldn't be happy, miss lottie couldn't be happy either with the flowers. When she realizes what she has done, she leaves adolescence to womanhood. She also realizes what she has done to Miss Lottie, pretty much everything was gone from her except her flowers. But when Elizabeth destroys them she feels empty, but not mad.
