This book was given to me and I eventually picked it up. I looked at the title and said "Ho hum, a guy flies around directing artillery from a small plane. I'll read it anyway."
The story is absolutely STUNNING.
His adventures and exploits in his OV10 Mohawk were just amazing. Directing artillery was just one facet of his duties. He was shot down once and he ended the book by landing on the Ho Chi Minh trail and picking up members of a recon patrol who were being chased by NVA. All this while under small arms fire.
This caused me to look for other books by forward air controllers (FACS) and there are several, by pilots of OV1 Bird Dogs and OV2s. In every case, what these men did was amazing.
If you are looking for a good read and another reason to respect our men (and women ) in uniform, this is it!
