Endless descriptions of the "intelligent ocean" distract from the actual story. The author entangles himself into never-ending scientific explanations and the reader looses the narrative. Also the author describes the protagonist reading printed books, using taperecorders, and memtions valves of electric gadgets, exposing his unawareness of how technology might develope by the time humans are able to do interstellar travel. Nice idea, but it was too dry and stiff for me to read until the end, I dropped it after going through two thirds of it...
