It plays out as a disappointing and superficial farce. The film delivers very little background research on these lifelong seekers of God and truth.
We will find many spiritual truths of the Catholic faith by reading "The 2nd Edition Catechism of the Catholic Church" by Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict XVI and wrote many books about "Jesus of Nazareth" and his experiences of intimate and miraculous spiritual encounters with the living Holy Spirit of God in Christ.
The film totally failed to portray the real Pope Benedict XVI.
It is my understanding, that not only is he a great scholar, but the most spiritually inspiring Pope that ever lived.
I have not read the writings of Pope Francis other than what was printed from the news conferences in the press. I have listened to some of his translated sermons from the Vatican. At the films ending credits, it is noted that "The Two Popes" contained fictionally enhanced drama to provide a more entertaining film to the viewing audiences.
