With a better actor in the lead this would have been a terrific movie. Sandler is fine for fluff comedies. Yet here heโs just generalizing a wacko. Why is he so obsessed with gambling that it destroyed his life? I didnโt get any if that from Sandler. He goes from scene to scene with the same โhigh on crackโ intensity that lacks nuance and motive. The only motive I got from Sandler is how he was trying to impress me with being a great actor. He pushes, he curses, and he generally acts like a loss cannon. But why? He had a great life: money, a beautiful house on the island, a NYC apartment, a Mercedes, a thriving diamond business, access to movie stars and athletes, a hot wife, a hot girl friend, smart kids, solid Jewish family โ so whatโs his problem? A better actor would have thought this through (someone like Christian Bale or Daniel Day-Lewis) and come up with a deeper understanding of gambling addiction.
