It's a rare doccie where the subject is also the observer and has merit but this is the exception to the rule. It really develops in intensity in the 3rd episode, the narrative builds and intensifies in a very well paced structure without the typical conceits. The documentarian's strident honesty and empirical approach provides the foundation to an honest telling of an incredible story with the benefit of hindsight, time, and life-experience. Her unflinching, relentless commitment to uncovering the truth is truly something to behold. At the same time, this documentary explores and demonstrates as well as tests the limits of ' a person who was present' in a situation to retell, and understand the situation with any kind of objectivity. It's super-watchable while being a near academic treatise on the limits of documentary film- a rare combo.
