Clare is in a precarious circumstance, “ passing for white.” Irene is settled on “strivers row.” Suddenly is Irene is carrying Clare’s “angst.” Why is this? Are they failed lovers? Does Irene want to be white too? Wait! She already told us she is satisfied, so what...is she “ mooning” about? Why should her comfortable life fall apart because “ crazy Clare?” How is the “ dramatic tension” being carried by this satisfied woman, when the other woman is the one in the precarious situation? Not believable. Then we have the “ tragic mulatto” trope as an ending. The “ deus ex machina” ending which leaves the entire issue of Passing unresolved. That was Clare’s big shot to really get into the title and the movie’s opportunity to really get into it. But they shoved, pushed, jumped her out the window. Done. Nah. (P.S.... They loved the camera too much; how many times did we see Clare and the Brownstones?) CePoat
