Although I enjoyed the fantasy and lyrical quality of the story-telling, the story itself was disjointed. Just when I started getting into a story line, the narrative jumped off in a different direction and/or different era, and I found myself thinking, "This bit must be important or else the author wouldn't be taking us in this direction but geeze, I'm not getting the why just yet....".
I never did.
